Coffee Brewing Tips

Master the art of coffee brewing with our comprehensive guide to different methods and techniques.

Universal Brewing Principles

⚖️

Ratio

Coffee-to-water ratio affects strength. Start with recommended ratios and adjust to taste.

🌡️

Temperature

Water temperature affects extraction. Too hot = bitter, too cold = sour.

⏱️

Time

Brew time controls extraction. Longer times extract more compounds.

🔄

Grind

Grind size affects extraction rate. Finer = faster extraction.

Brewing Methods

Pour Over (V60, Chemex)

Clean, bright flavors with excellent clarity. Perfect for highlighting the unique characteristics of single-origin coffees.

Use a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio (15g coffee to 240g water)
Water temperature: 195-205°F (90-96°C)
Grind: Medium-fine (like table salt)
Bloom for 30 seconds with 2x the coffee weight in water
Pour in slow, circular motions
Total brew time: 2.5-4 minutes

French Press

Full-bodied coffee with rich texture and oils. Great for darker roasts and those who prefer a heavier mouthfeel.

Use a 1:12 coffee-to-water ratio (30g coffee to 360g water)
Water temperature: 195-205°F (90-96°C)
Grind: Coarse (like breadcrumbs)
Steep for 4 minutes
Stir after 1 minute of steeping
Press slowly and steadily

AeroPress

Versatile brewing method that can produce both espresso-like concentrate and filter coffee. Clean and smooth results.

Use a 1:14 coffee-to-water ratio (17g coffee to 240g water)
Water temperature: 175-185°F (79-85°C)
Grind: Fine to medium-fine
Steep for 1-2 minutes
Stir gently after adding water
Press for 20-30 seconds

Espresso

Concentrated, intense coffee with rich crema. The foundation for cappuccinos, lattes, and other espresso-based drinks.

Use a 1:2 coffee-to-espresso ratio (18g coffee to 36g espresso)
Water temperature: 190-196°F (88-91°C)
Grind: Very fine
Extraction time: 25-30 seconds
Pre-infusion for 2-3 seconds
Consistent tamping pressure (30 lbs)

Cold Brew

Smooth, low-acidity coffee perfect for hot days. Concentrated brew that can be diluted with water or milk.

Use a 1:8 coffee-to-water ratio (1 cup coffee to 8 cups water)
Grind: Very coarse
Steep time: 12-24 hours at room temperature
Filter through fine mesh or paper filter
Dilute concentrate 1:1 with water or milk
Store concentrate in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks

Moka Pot

Strong, espresso-like coffee with rich flavor. Traditional Italian brewing method that uses steam pressure.

Use medium-fine grind
Fill water chamber to safety valve level
Fill basket with coffee, level but don't tamp
Use medium heat
Remove from heat when coffee starts sputtering
Cool bottom with cold water to stop extraction
